Narrative
Robert "Bob" Devereux was a remarkable individual with a complex family history. Born around 1855 in Rusk County, Texas, he was initially known as Robert Freeney. However, upon emancipation in 1865, he adopted the Devereux surname instead. It is believed that Robert and his older siblings were the biological children of Katie Bradley and Daniel Devereux, who were formerly enslaved individuals.
Daniel Devereux, the son of Tabby and Scott, was a slave owned by John William Devereux and his son, Julien Sidney Devereux, of Rusk County. Daniel fathered Katy's first 11 children, including Robert, before his death in 1856. After Daniel's passing, Martin Freeney married Katie and adopted her children, who then took on the surname "Freeney." The first set of children born to Katie and Daniel were named "Little Tabby," Elmina, Arthur/Art, Aaron, Rolly, Lucy Ann, Robert "Bob," George Sr, and Daniel Jr.
Tragically, Daniel Devereux Sr. passed away on November 19, 1856, just before the birth of Daniel Jr. in 1857. Despite their challenging circumstances, Katie and Martin Freeney continued to raise their family together. In the 1870 and 1880 CENSUS records, their children were listed under the surname "Freeny." The names of their children were Lydia, July (Ida), and Lorena.
Robert "Bob" Devereux, the subject of further genealogical research, was the son of Katie (nee Bradley-Freeny) and Daniel Devereux. The Devereux family records indicate that Tabby and Scott were slaves owned by the Devereux family. Daniel Devereux, born in Alabama around 1825, married Katie Bradley. In the Devereux Family Papers, Katie is the only female listed with a son named "Robert" in 1855 before her marriage to Martin Freeney. Sadly, Daniel Devereux passed away in November 1856, when Robert Sr. was only about a year old. This was approximately six months prior to the death of Julien S. Devereux at Monte Verde Plantation in Rusk County, Texas.
In summary, Robert "Bob" Devereux's life was intertwined with a complex family history involving the Devereux and Freeney families. Born as Robert Freeney, he later adopted the Devereux surname and became an integral part of the Devereux family genealogy.
Robert "Bob" DEVEREAUX has multiple civil unions.
Robert "Bob" DEVEREAUX entered into a civil union with Cora CLEAVER, the daughter of Charlie HOBBS and Sarah Ella CLEAVER.
Cora CLEAVER's brother, Reverend Horney Cleaver HOBBS, married Nancy Umas Cleaver BURROWS and they are the parents of Arthur Garfield CLEAVER.
Arthur Garfield CLEAVER and Maebelle Cleaver BROWN are the parents of Tuskegee Airman Lowell Henry CLEAVER Sr. who married Celestine Lenora Cleaver ANDERSON.
